Union protests job plan in France

Paris (dpa) - Tens of thousands of trade union members and students took to the streets throughout France on Tuesday to protest Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin's proposal to reform the labour laws on employing young workers.

In the southern city of Toulouse, 15,000 people took part in the demonstration to demand Villepin withdraw his bill for a first-hiring contract (CPE) that would give employers the right to lay off newly- hired workers under 27 years within two years without justification.

In addition, organizers said there were more than 10,000 protestors in Rennes, about 10,000 in Brest and 8,000 in Saint- Brieuc. The biggest demonstrations were expected to take place in Marseille and Paris later in the day.

France's powerful and notoriously inflexible trade unions and most opposition politicians charge the measure is the beginning of the government's plans to drastically dilute workers' rights in the name of fostering employment.

Nearly one-quarter of French adults 25 years of age and younger are currently unemployed, a situation considered at least partly responsible for the violent unrest that swept through suburban ghettoes throughout France for three weeks in October and November.

Former Socialist prime minister Laurent Fabius, an announced candidate for the 2007 presidential elections, where he could face Villepin, said Tuesday that the centre-right prime minister was "exploiting the distress" of the young "to demolish their rights."

The size and ferocity of the demonstrations may have an effect on how persistently Villepin will attempt to push the measure through parliament. Its unpopularity among the French has already led to his own popularity dipping among voters.

However, he may also decide to ignore the protests altogether and invoke a controversial constitutional article that allows him to make the measure law without a parliamentary vote, which could lead to more widespread protests later.

The head of the opposition Socialist, Francois Hollande, said Tuesday that if the measure was made law without a vote, his party would file a motion of censure.

According to a poll by the Ifop institute made public Tuesday, 55 per cent of the French said the unions were right to protest against the measure.
